How to Survive the Holidays During & After Divorce

Divorce is difficult enough to cope with outside of the holiday season, but even worse when you are faced with the barrage of reminders that this is meant to be the most wonderful time of the year. People often feel the pressure of having to maintain a certain image, despite the fact that life may not be quite so wonderful or festive, but rather lonely. Instead of anticipating gifts and celebrations, a newly divorced or separated person may feel dread at the thought of the impending holiday season.

It does not have to be this painful, however, and there are ways to get through the holidays if you are recently divorced or in the midst of one.

It goes without saying that most things in life progress a lot more smoothly when one plans ahead. Planning ahead, in this case, could mean planning to do something fun with people you truly care about in a stress free environment. Escape the things that may trigger painful memories or emotions and remember that this is just another holiday that will pass.

Take this as an opportunity to create new traditions. New traditions will give you the chance to create new memories and relieve yourself of a past that will only burden you if you continue to hold onto it. Begin new rituals with your friends and family to embark on a fresh start.

It is also important to be realistic. There is no such thing as a perfect holiday, so do not hold yourself to unrealistic standards that belong in the cinema rather than in real life, especially if this is your first post-divorce holiday season. Instead of worrying about perfection, take care of yourself. Get the right amount of rest, exercise, and eat healthy. It might seem obvious, but we often forget to care for ourselves.
