Divorce & New Year's Resolutions

A divorce or separation can be difficult during the holiday season. Even though you might be emotional or stressed about the dissolution of your marriage, the start of the New Year is a great way to refocus yourself. Setting resolutions about your divorce can help make an emotional time easier and keep you looking towards the future. Our Manchester divorce lawyers at Sekella Law, PLLC suggest some New Year's Resolutions that you can use as goals for 2017.

Five divorce resolutions you can make this year:

  1. Finish your divorce this year. Dragging out the process, whether to get retribution or out of hope for a rekindling, isn't in your best interest. Make sure you and your spouse are on the same page and then commit to ending or salvaging your marriage.
  2. Meet with a financial expert. Before the divorce is finalized, plan to meet with a financial expert. He or she can provide advice on your current financial situation during the divorce process and how you can start planning for the future.
  3. Cooperation over friendship. If you and your spouse share children and custody, you will need to cooperate to a certain extent. By no means do you need to be friends with your ex-sometimes this just isn't possible, especially right after the divorce. However, you can make an effort to stop talking poorly about your ex in front of your children or to communicate better.
  4. Fight off the bad feelings. Divorce is emotional, and it is okay to be sad or angry about it, but giving into those emotions isn't going to be good for you. Find things to fight off feelings of depression or anxiety. Spend time with people that love and support you. Start regularly exercising or talk with a counselor or life coach about how your feelings.
  5. Forgiveness is your friend. In many situations, forgiveness can be more healing for the person that gives it. If your divorce happened because of your spouse, finding a way to forgive them can help you move on. More importantly, you should find a way to forgive yourself. If your actions incited the divorce or you feel as if you didn't act on the warning signs, forgiving yourself can be the most healing thing you can do.
